Union Wesley AME ZION Church, one of the oldest churches in the DC area, will celebrate its 180th anniversary on Sunday, October 13. The church was originally located at 23rd & L Street in Northwest Washington, and many people in the DC area, especially in Georgetown, attended Union Wesley, even Peter Green. Some families go back as far as 100 years. Anyone who has ever been a member or attended services at Union Wesley is invited on Sunday, October 13, to help celebrate this stellar anniversary at 1860 Michigan Ave. NE DC, where Reverend Brian Relford is pastor.

Collaborate to Educate Our Sons is accepting entries to its Essay Contest for scholarships for the 24/25 academic year. The contest ends on October 18. At least four scholarships will be awarded to sophomore, junior, or senior males in High School, Vocational School, College, and/or Seminary. The National Building Museum hosts THE BIG BUILD, an annual FREE, STEM-focused festival for all ages exploring a wide variety of unique, interactive activities with roofers, plumbers, home remodelers, construction workers, carpenters, designers, and artisans. There will be a 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Jennie Dean Educational Foundation at the Manassas Museum, in Manassas Virginia on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 4pm7pm. Admission is Free! Sixty years ago, the Foundation was established to provide students with loans and scholarships. The inspiration for the Foundation’s work comes from the efforts of Ms Jennie Dean. Despite being born into slavery in 1852 and without the benefit of a formal education, she changed the lives of countless African Americans in Manassas, Prince William County, and the region. She opened the Manassas Industrial School for Colored Youth in 1893. Since its inception the Foundation has provided loans and scholarships to students to pursue their educational dreams.
